Is Rocket Money Worth It? What's Free, What's $7-$14 a Month, and the Fee Nobody Mentions

Rocket Money (formerly Truebill) is one of the most downloaded budget apps in the US, and it's popular for a reason most budget apps can't claim: it finds subscriptions you forgot about and cancels them for you.
It also has three price tiers, a "pay what you think is fair" model, and a success fee on bill negotiation that catches people off guard. Here's what each level actually gives you, and who it's built for.
What Rocket Money costs
There are three tiers.
Free - $0. Link your accounts, see all your subscriptions in one place, get upcoming bill reminders, a spending breakdown, your credit score, and a simple budget with up to three category limits. You can request bill negotiation on the free tier too.
Premium - $7 to $14 a month. You pick the price on a slider; the features are the same at every point. Premium adds subscription cancellation done for you by Rocket Money's team, unlimited category budgets, custom categories, transaction rules, splits and notes, manual transactions, CSV export, net worth tracking, automated savings, a shared login for a partner, and web access. There is no annual plan - Rocket Money's help centre confirms billing is monthly only, so that's $84 to $168 a year.
Premium+ - $15 a month. Everything in Premium plus Rowan, an AI assistant you text, and bill negotiation with no success fee.
The fee. Bill negotiation - Rocket Money's team calling your phone, cable or internet provider to get a lower rate - is available on every tier, but on Free and Premium it costs 35% to 60% of your first year's savings if it works. Lower your internet bill by $20 a month and Rocket Money keeps $84 to $144 of that first $240. Only Premium+ removes the fee.

What Rocket Money does well
Subscription detection. This is the feature people download it for. Link your accounts and Rocket Money surfaces every recurring charge - including the gym you stopped going to and the streaming trial that never ended. If you've never audited your subscriptions, the first scan alone can pay for a year of Premium. Tracking subscriptions is worth doing even without an app, but Rocket Money makes it automatic.
Cancellation done for you. On Premium, you tap cancel and their team does the rest, usually within 2-10 days. For subscriptions that hide the cancel button, that's real value.
Bill negotiation. When it works, it works. The fee is steep, but you keep 100% of the savings after year one.
A generous free tier for awareness. If you only want to see your subscriptions and a rough spending breakdown, the free plan does that without a card.
Where Rocket Money falls short
It's a subscription manager first, a budget app second. The budgeting features are basic. Three category limits on Free; unlimited on Premium, but still simple compared with YNAB or Monarch. If you want to plan a month, not just watch one, it's thin.
Bank sync is required. Everything runs on linked accounts through Plaid. Manual transactions are a Premium feature, and even then the app is designed around sync. If you don't want to connect your bank, Rocket Money has nothing for you. What that connection actually involves.
Billing complaints. Reviews and Better Business Bureau records include recurring complaints about unexpected negotiation fees and trouble cancelling Premium. Read the fee terms before you request a negotiation.
No BNPL tracking. Afterpay, Klarna, and Affirm installments show up as ordinary debits. You can't see which plans are active or what's still owed. Why that matters for your budget.
Monthly-only pricing adds up. $7 a month is cheap. $14 a month is $168 a year - more than YNAB.
Who Rocket Money is built for
Someone with a lot of subscriptions, a few negotiable bills, and no interest in tracking every transaction. If you want an app to find waste and remove it for you, and you're comfortable linking accounts, Rocket Money is the best at that specific job.
Who it's not built for
You want a real budgeting system. Rocket Money tracks; it doesn't plan.
You don't want to connect your bank. Nothing works without it.
You use BNPL. Those payments are invisible to it.
You want a fixed, predictable price. Pay-what-you-want sounds nice; $14 a month on autopilot doesn't.
Budgetpeer is free to start. Upgrade for $4.99/month, $49/year, or $129 once for lifetime access. No bank login. BNPL installments land in the right months, with a reminder before each one is due. Download on the App Store โ
The honest verdict
Rocket Money is worth it if the subscription cleanup and bill negotiation save you more than the fees - and for a lot of people, the first month does exactly that. Use the free tier to see what it finds, decide whether the cancellations are worth Premium, and read the negotiation fee terms twice.
If what you actually want is a budget - one where you know what's coming, including installments - it's the wrong tool. The best budget app for you depends on what you need, and "find my subscriptions" and "plan my month" are different needs.
