Monarch vs Dollarwise: Which Budget App Is Worth Paying For?

An owl on a branch sprouting green banknotes instead of leaves, with a monarch butterfly on its head

Monarch and Dollarwise turn up in the same searches because they land at the same price: about $100 a year. Both connect to your bank, both sort your transactions for you, and neither has a free plan.

That's where the similarity ends. Monarch is an all-in-one money dashboard - budgets, investments, net worth, and a partner on the same account. Dollarwise, created by finance YouTuber Caleb Hammer and published by Hammer Media, is deliberately narrow: a 50/30/20 budget and a weekly five-minute review. Here's how to choose.

Budgetpeer is free to start. Upgrade for $4.99/month, $49/year, or $129 once for lifetime access. No bank login. BNPL installments land in the right months, with a reminder before each one is due. Start your budget before the holidays. Black November: $29.99 for your first year (then $49/year), $74.99 for lifetime, until Nov 30. Download on the App Store โ†’

Monarch also sells a pricier Plus plan; for most people the comparison is Core against Dollarwise, and there the annual price is the same on the web.

Two things to know about Dollarwise's price. It depends on where you buy - the App Store annual plan is $10 cheaper than the web. And it has moved: The College Investor listed $19.99 a month in April 2026, and Dollarwise's own site now shows $14.99 after the intro months. Check it on the day you sign up.

Platforms

Monarch: iPhone, Android and web.

Dollarwise: iPhone, iPad, Android and web.

Both work on a phone and a computer, so this one doesn't decide it. Location might: Dollarwise says it's built for US bank accounts, that Canadian banks may not connect reliably, and that it isn't available in Europe, Asia or Australia.

Budgeting method

Monarch lets you choose category budgeting (a limit per category) or flex budgeting (fixed, flexible and non-monthly buckets), and switch between them mid-month. You set the rules.

Dollarwise sets them for you. It builds your plan on 50/30/20 - 50% needs, 30% wants, 20% savings - and lets you adjust the split. Transactions sort into categories automatically, and the weekly review is a swipe: right for needs, left for wants, down for savings. Custom categories arrived in June 2026, and split transactions and tags in October, so older reviews that say you can't make your own categories are out of date.

If you want a framework handed to you, Dollarwise. If you want to decide how your budget works, Monarch.

Bank connection and reliability

Monarch syncs through Plaid and other aggregators. Dollarwise connects through Quiltt and Plaid. Every sync app has the occasional dropped connection; the difference here is track record.

Monarch is the more established app, and its pricing page cites 4.9 stars across more than 100,000 reviews. Dollarwise launched in January 2025 as Simpler Budget, took its current name that June, and relaunched with a major update (version 6.0) in February 2026. On the App Store it has 3.8 stars from 3.9K ratings (October 2026), and earlier reviews mention accounts disconnecting and transactions showing up twice.

Investments and net worth

Monarch tracks investments, loans, your home's estimated value and net worth alongside spending. Dollarwise is about spending and, since its October 2026 update, paying off debt: it doesn't present itself as an investment or net-worth tracker. If you want the whole financial picture in one app, that settles it.

Households

Monarch includes a partner or family member at no extra cost, with a shared view of the budget. Dollarwise's site and App Store listing don't mention sharing. For couples managing money together, Monarch is the one built for it. How to budget as a couple.

The thing they share

Both need your bank login to be useful. If that's the part you're uneasy about, the choice isn't Monarch or Dollarwise - it's a different kind of app.

Budgetpeer is free to start. Upgrade for $4.99/month, $49/year, or $129 once for lifetime access. No bank login. BNPL installments land in the right months, with a reminder before each one is due. Choose Monarch if

  • You share money with a partner or family

  • You want investments, loans and net worth in the same app

  • You'd rather choose your own budgeting method

  • You want a week to try it before paying

Choose Dollarwise if

  • You want a 50/30/20 budget set up for you

  • One short review a week suits you better than managing categories

  • You follow Caleb Hammer's show and want his approach in an app

  • Your bank accounts are in the US

The honest verdict

At the same $100 or so a year, Monarch does more: households, investments, a choice of methods and a longer record. Dollarwise is the simpler app, and simple is a real feature if other apps have overwhelmed you - but it's newer, its ratings are lower, and its price has moved this year. If you pick it, buy where it's cheaper and try it before the trial ends.
